The organization, whose name means "To Rise Up" in Inuktitut, represents the Inuit of Nunavik and safeguards their rights, interests, and financial compensation as outlined in the 1975 James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement and the more recent offshore Nunavik Inuit Land Claim Agreement. Makivik is involved in various activities, including owning profitable businesses, promoting social economic development, improving housing conditions, preserving Inuit language and culture, and protecting the environment. The establishment of the Nuvviti Development Corporation in 2017 further enhances their operations. Makivik's work highlights the potential benefits of modern Aboriginal treaties and land claim settlements for both governments and Indigenous communities. By signing the first Agreement in 1975, Makivik emphasized the importance of developing a new relationship and approach to conducting business with the governments of Quebec and Canada.
