CrossBoundary

CrossBoundary recently formed CrossBoundary Energy, the first dedicated investment fund for Commercial and Industrial solar in Africa. Many businesses in Africa generate a significant portion of their own electricity through inside-the-fence diesel generation. Due to the cost of diesel, it would be economically and environmentally optimal for these businesses to switch to renewable generation through solar and other alternatives. However, businesses are ill equipped to take the financial and technical risk to finance a conversion to renewables. At the same time, capital lacks a standardized platform to access these profitable but relatively small transactions. CrossBoundary Energy is a platform to aggregate finance for medium scale renewable self-generation. The platform finances renewable generation projects (0.2MW-10MW) that serve commercial customers in Africa such as off-grid light manufacturing, cell towers, farms, remote hospitals, eco-lodges and beverage bottlers. Our goal is to enable the delivery of energy-as-service and unlock the latent opportunity for renewable own-generation in Africa.

Agventure

Agventure works with non-irrigated farms with a focus on enabling Sustainable Conservation Agriculture practices to be established. Agventure Ltd started trading in 2010. A commonly stated assumption is that Kenya does not receive enough rainfall to sustain rainfed farming. Evidence shows otherwise; most of the Rift Valley receives over 1000 mm of rain per year; whereas 300mm is sufficient to produce a crop. Some parts of the country receive nearly 2000mm per year. The rainfall assumption is incorrect. Agventure has tackled this problem by focusing on diversifying cropping systems; identifying alternative crops, learning how to grow them and building markets for those crops.

Jacaranda Health

Jacaranda Health is a healthcare provider striving to improve the landscape of maternal and child health in Kenya. Their aim is to offer affordable maternal and pediatric services to underserved populations in peri-urban areas, which often struggle to access adequate medical care. In Kenya alone, there are over 10 million reproductive-age females, and approximately 2.6 million peri-urban families who could greatly benefit from these services. With a population growth rate of 2.45%, there is a significant demand in Kenya for safe and high-quality maternal and neonatal care. Jacaranda Health operates medical clinics that cater to the needs of underserved populations in peri-urban and urban areas, where access to such services is limited. Remarkably, Jacaranda Health provides services of comparable quality to other private hospitals but at just one-fifth of the cost. Furthermore, their maternal mortality rate is zero, a remarkable achievement compared to the country's average rate of 400 deaths per 100,000 births.
